Norman Kenneth "Ken" Hughes, 85, passed away on Wednesday (August 9, 2017) following an extended illness. Ken was born on March 13, 1932 in Roan Mtn. to the late Robie & Lillian (Miller) Hughes.

Ken unselfishly and honorably served his country for 22 years as a Master Sargent in the United States Air Force. He was a decorated Korean War Veteran. After his retirement from the Air Force, Ken was a manger for Hills Department Store. Ken was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; he will be greatly missed.

Norman Kenneth "Ken" Hughes, 85, passed away on Wednesday (August 9, 2017) following an extended illness. Ken was born on March 13, 1932 in Roan Mtn. to the late Robie & Lillian (Miller) Hughes.

Ken unselfishly and honorably served his country for 22 years as a Master Sargent in the United States Air Force. He was a decorated Korean War Veteran. After his retirement from the Air Force, Ken was a manger for Hills Department Store. Ken was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; he will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his sister, Doris; and two brothers, Carl and Laney.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Debora Amato (Stephen); two sons, Robert Michael (Heather) and Terry Allen (Kimberly) Hughes; sister, Thelma; eight grandchildren, Tyler Hughes, Brooke Hughes, Mitchell Hughes, Kenneth Hughes, Sheena Amato, Nathan Amato, Vincent Amato, and Jacob Amato; four great-grandchildren, Wyatt Amato, Marley and Mia Amato, and Bailey Amato; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday (August 13, 2017) from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Elmer Lester officiating.

Committal services will be held on Sunday (August 13, 2017) at 3 p.m. in the Garden of Everlasting Life III at East Lawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Posts 3/265. Pallbearers will be Robert Hughes, Terry Hughes, Stephen Amato, Jason Amato, Jacob Amato and Warren Cable.
